Bluestar Fibres PH2 – 5

VALUE: £3.1m

CLIENT: BLUESTAR FIBRES

PROJECT: BLUESTAR FIBRES Ph2-5, GRIMSBY

Following extensive pre-qualifying considerations, Thompsons were contracted as Principal Contractor by Bluestar Fibres, Moody Lane, Grimsby for the first time to carry out the subsequent phases of Bluestar’s site rationalization Programme to prepare and remove the plant which used to manufacture compounds for jet engine brake linings. The works were extensive requiring asbestos removal, soft-strip, dismantling and demolition, divorcing structures that had to remain operational and re-cladding exposed retained structures.

Other than explosive demolition, the project re-quired every type of demolition methodology including; manual, dismantling by crane, con-trolled felling by steel rope & machine, high-reach demolition, working from scaffold, mechanical shear, oxy-acetylene cutting, licensed and non-licensed asbestos removal. The range of demolition machines went from skid-steer, 30 Tonne Excavators, 60 Tonne Excavators with hydraulic shears and specialist 35 metre High-Reach excavators.

Over the course of 3 years, Thompsons undertook all the Phase 2, Phase 3, Phase 4 and Phase 5 Demolitions works.

The scope of works for each of the phases comprised of;

  • set up an exclusion zone within the live working chemical site, ensuring that the Client’s ongoing processes were not impeded
  • carry out extensive background noise, vibration, & dust monitoring, continuing through-out the project
  • remove all asbestos (notifiable and non-notifiable), carry out environmental pre-clean and soft strip
  • demolish all structures down to slab level, to a pre-determined sequence of work
