In July, Nick Knowles and Gaby Blackman were joined by hundreds of volunteers, including Thompsons of Prudhoe, to repurpose a derelict building in Wallsend that had been gifted to True Colours Theatre.
The theatre and charity runs an inclusive theatre school for children and young people, many of whom have additional needs such as autism, ADHD and anxiety disorders.
We were proud to support the DIY SOS team, in supporting this local charity. Our team were on hand throughout the build and in addition, donated and delivered topsoil, 2 tonnes of Gabion basket stone and large boulders (2.5 tonnes each!) from our quarry that featured in the landscaping design. A fantastic team effort and heartwarming project to be part of!
Now the space has been transformed into a “safe space” for the charity’s members, consisting of a performance and dance studio, cafe, sensory garden and break-out rooms.
The show aired on Wednesday 30th August 2023, but you can catch up on BBC iPlayer in case you missed it.
