Crawcrook Quarry

Thompsons of Prudhoe are the new owners of Crawcrook Quarry. We own the areas to the south and west of Crawcrook Lane and north of the B6317.

Crawcrook Quarry had previously been a sand and gravel quarry that had been tipped with putrescible waste (sometimes called ‘black bin bag’ waste). Unfortunately, the restoration and remediation of the site was never completed by previous owners.

What is the new plan for Crawcrook Quarry?

As the proud new owners, we want to restore the land to ensure the green open spaces that were lost so many years ago, are returned to the local community. Our plans will safely restore the site with a mix of grassland, shrubs and trees to compliment the areas around it, and create extensive wildlife habitats.

The new plan will take 15 years to complete and requires a total of 1.35 million cubic metres of inert materials like clays and soils that will be put into the voids and previously tipped areas to address all the instability. Our plan will ensure the site is properly remediated and restored.

To carry out the work, the construction of a new vehicular access to the south west of the site is required, directly onto the B6317.

We will also be responsible for the ongoing monitoring and management of the old landfill site as required by the Environment Agency.

Who has been involved in developing the new plan?

Over the last three years, the development team has undertaken a lot of work to help us come up with the best solution for the quarry.

Site surveys have been undertaken by specialist consultants, we have consulted extensively with local residents, council officers and local councillors as well as supporting the reformed Crawcrook Quarry Liaison Group.
