Lynemouth Coastal Landfill Remediation Project Wins ICE Medium Project Award!

We’re proud to announce that the Lynemouth Coastal Landfill Remediation Project has been awarded the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) Medium Project Award!

The team came together to celebrate this fantastic achievement at the ICE North East Awards in Newcastle, a night dedicated to recognising the best in civil engineering across the region.

Thompsons were contracted by BAM Nuttall to deliver the earthworks and remediation aspects of this important project, working on behalf of Northumberland County Council.

The site, located along the stunning Northumberland coastline, includes a beach and foreshore backed by a raised area formed from historic colliery spoil tipping. Over the years, a variety of waste materials—plastics, rubber tubing, glass, construction rubble, and asbestos-containing materials—had been deposited here, contributing to ongoing coastal erosion and posing a serious threat to the environment.

Working together, we tackled the complex challenge of safely reducing and remediating these materials, significantly lowering the risk of further contamination of the beach and marine ecosystem.

This award is a testament to the collaborative effort, expertise, and dedication of everyone involved. We are incredibly proud to have played a role in protecting and preserving Lynemouth Bay for future generations.

A huge thank you to the team at BAM Nuttall for inviting us to celebrate together—it was a pleasure to share this milestone with the entire project team!
