Asbestos is a highly emotive word and can often be cause for concern for property managers or anyone responsible for its safe management. However, there is no need for concern when you involve specialist professional advisors and contractors who are trained, licensed and experienced in the management of asbestos, such as any member of the specialist trade body ARCA – Asbestos Removal Contractors’ Association.

Thompsons of Prudhoe hold a full asbestos removal licence issued by the Health & Safety Executive, demonstrating that our asbestos removal teams work to the highest possible standards within this highly regulated area of our industry.

Thompsons of Prudhoe have decades of experience removing a broad range of asbestos products, and can complete projects safely and efficiently. Our staff are experienced in removing asbestos products from a wide variety of different structures, including everything from insulated flooring and roofing, through to pipework, lagging and internal fittings and fixtures.
Thompsons’ teams have extensive experience of a variety of asbestos removal techniques including cut & wrap, quill falcon wet media blasting, and BS8520 wet strip injection.
Our ability to hit very tight programmes whilst maintaining complete legal compliance under time pressures was recognised by our being shortlisted at the Construction News Specialists Awards 2015 in the category Construction Project under £2 Million for our work on Phase 4 of the Eldon Square Shopping Centre refurbishment. Please see the Case Study for more details.
Our asbestos removal teams receive on-going training to ensure that they are removing asbestos in a way which is safe for both themselves, and the public. The team at Thompsons are able to integrate asbestos removal within a fully comprehensive demolition service, allowing our customers to deal with one company throughout the entire site preparation and enabling process, from initial consultation to handover of the site, ready for the construction phase.

Over 50 site based Thompsons’ employees are currently certified and medically-approved to remove asbestos. All asbestos removal operatives receive annual training via an HSE approved asbestos training centre, certified by the National Demolition Training Group and CITB. Operatives also receive third party medical assessments and all have current face fit testing for their respiratory equipment.
Operations are supervised at site level by one of our 10 highly-experienced and qualified Asbestos Site Supervisors who oversee all operatives and operations on site. All Site Supervisors have also undertaken the CITB Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme accreditation.
The nominated on-site Asbestos Site Supervisor allocated to oversee a project is supported by our Health and Safety, Environmental and Contracts Managers to ensure all site actions are carried out correctly, to the highest level of safety and to the lowest level of environmental impact. Executive Directors take a hands-on lead to support the Supervisors and Managers and ensure maintenance of our high standards through regular planned and, equally important, unplanned site visits.
The value of projects we undertake runs from tens of thousands to several million pounds.
Some asbestos can be removed by any contractor without a licence – but determining where the legal boundaries lie may be difficult. Also, should asbestos be discovered part way through a project, there can be delays if the so-far unknown asbestos turns out to be “licensable”. Only a contractor with a full HSE Asbestos Removal Licence can undertake any type of asbestos removal work, giving clients certainty over ability to deal with possibly hidden asbestos containing materials (ACMs).
