Utilising the right techniques to remove asbestos

At Thompsons of Prudhoe we have had the pleasure to work on all manner of sites in the several decades we have been in business. These have included industrial facilities of every size, scale, and age. The latter is very important because it means we have knowledge of working on structures built during various periods and had to deal with the materials that were allowed to be used at that time.

Facilities built before 1985 can contain three different types of asbestos; Chrysotile, Amosite and Crocidolite. These are more commonly referred to as white, brown and blue respectively. The latter two are the most harmful but were banned in 1985 so buildings after this period should not contain them. Chrysotile use continued until 1999.

Before any alterations can be made to a structure, whether it is demolition, decommissioning or regeneration, all asbestos needs to be identified and managed. This will often result in asbestos removal. This is important because when the material is disturbed and fibres are scattered into the air it becomes incredibly hazardous. The asbestos should be removed under the most careful conditions, by licensed specialists, ensuring those handling it are wearing the correct PPE and in the correct controlled conditions. Once removed the material needs to be packed and disposed of safely.

Our work has seen us provide asbestos removal solutions to account for all of these materials. As a result we have experience with a variety of different techniques to remove the asbestos safely and effectively. Each of these is designed to keep the spread of fibres to an absolute minimum. A number of them utilise moisture as it reduces the potential that the material will be scattered into the air and spread.
