Demolition and Dismantling
We are based in the North of England, but are a national demolition and dismantling specialist, honoured with the title of “Demolition Specialist of the Year 2014” at the prestigious national Construction News’ Specialists Awards. Demonstrating our consistent level of quality we were shortlisted as Finalists for the award again in 2015 and 2016.
Demolition contractors can sometimes seem like undertakers, as we deal with all aspects of the demise of a site. Others have described demolition and site clearance contractors as being like midwives, preparing a site for new life. Either way, we can assure you that Thompsons will act throughout with professionalism and integrity that over 68 years of being a specialist family business has instilled in us.
Thompsons of Prudhoe are able to offer a fully comprehensive demolition service, allowing our customers to deal with one company throughout the entire site preparation and enabling process, from initial consultation to handover of the site, ready for the construction phase. We term this our “One Stop Shop” service for Brownfield developments. In essence, we take any site in any condition and:
- Make it secure
- Remove all asbestos and other hazardous waste
- Demolish and clear
- Remove slab
- Remediate ground
- Crush on site
- Remove surplus
- Supply any extra aggregate required: Primary, Secondary or Recycled
- Provide any platform for construction
- Hand over to Construction Contractor build-ready
- without the need for any further sub-contractors.

Whilst mechanical, civil demolition techniques are our core offering, we bring great experience of specialised techniques such as manual, robotic and the controlled use of explosives to bring down the largest or most difficult of structures on specialist industrial facilities.
The demolition team at Thompsons are long standing members of the National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC), the Asbestos Removal Contractors’ Association (ARCA) and Institute of Demolition Engineers (IDE). We receive regular training on the latest industry developments to ensure that all our customers receive the highest possible levels of expertise on every aspect of their demolition projects. Alongside this, Thompsons continually invest in the most up to date equipment to ensure that all our demolition projects are delivered in a professional manner, on time and within budget, whilst also maintaining our excellent safety record.
Thompsons of Prudhoe have undertaken all types and sizes of demolition projects such as housing estates, schools, universities, hospitals, tower blocks, shopping centres, car parks, bridges, façade retention works, railway works, government buildings, industrial estates, chemical plants, even nuclear sites, to name a few more specialised types.
Our teams have extensive experience of working within close proximity to live services, equipment and transport links such as railway lines and motorways, and within large plant environments. Over the last few decades we have developed a particular specialism in industrial dismantling work in chemical, petrochemical, nuclear and other potentially “difficult” industrial plants.
Thompsons’ dismantling team have developed a wide range of specialist techniques to protect existing infrastructure from potential damage caused by demolition and dismantling works. Our dismantling and asset recovery service allows our customers to retain existing plant & equipment at their facilities, either for resale or reuse. Thompsons of Prudhoe’s highly skilled dismantling team can ensure these assets are protected and dismantled in a safe and controlled manner enabling reuse at a later stage, or re-sale to maximise value.
Our award-winning speciality is progressive asbestos removal (if necessary), soft strip, and mechanical demolition and careful dismantling of any building, structure or item of process plant using our fleet of specialised high-reach machines with specific attachments, dovetailing with our extensive earthworks, reclamation and on-site recycling teams. This helps maximise safety and minimise or even reduce contract programmes, when working closely with clients, their advisors or other stakeholders.
Delivery of our commitment to excellence in safety, environmental and technical performance is demonstrated by our awards, externally validated certifications, accreditations and our membership of the most appropriate trade associations for our business, ensuring we are always up to speed with best practice and current legislation.

Thompsons of Prudhoe have committed to reducing the level of waste being sent to landfill, and has embedded this target into the company’s policies and procedures.
Due to our strict procedures on waste segregation, a large percentage of our customers’ demolition waste is re-used or recycled such as timber, slates, plasterboard, scrap metal, plastics, soils, bricks and concrete.
It has long been the policy of Thompsons of Prudhoe Ltd to recycle as much of the material that arises from our demolition and site reclamation operations as is reasonably possible. This is not only cheaper, but also helps clients demonstrate and deliver a sustainable approach to their project delivery. Our commitment to this is established through our ISO 14001 accreditation and our Company Policies.
Our current recycling rate is greater than 97%, and you will see from some of the attached Case Studies that we often exceed this, achieving over 99% recycling rates.
There are two options for the recycling of demolition and excavated material – on site and off site. This will be determined by factors such as space available, client requirements, planning restrictions, environmental factors, programme and proximity to off-site facility.
Whether crushed and screened on site by our extensive plant fleet, or removed to an off-site recycling facility, all brick, concrete and mixed soils / brick / concrete material will be crushed, screened and processed into recycled materials meeting specification as required by a client, such as Type 1 or Type 2 sub-base which will be either reused on the project or on our other construction projects in the area.
Any asbestos present cannot be recycled and will be sent to a properly licensed hazardous waste landfill. We hold a full HSE asbestos removal licence and manage all paperwork and legal compliance for clients.
We segregate demolition and excavated arisings into streams to facilitate better recycling and product purity. In most projects we would usually find the following material and would expect there to be no more than 1% going to landfill:
Concrete, Bricks, Wood, Metal, Aggregates
We are proud to promote our commitment to safety, training and apprenticeships in the demolition sector. This commitment and consistent delivery of training was recognised at the 2104 NFDC Annual Awards when we were awarded a “Highly Commended” award for the category “Investing in Skills for a New Generation”.
Over 85 site based operatives are currently employed directly by Thompsons. All plant and demolition operatives hold relevant CITB training, and competency cards for the areas in which they work. Operatives are trained through the National Demolition Training Group on all specialised equipment in use on our sites. Our operatives have also acquired vocational training at NVQ levels 2 and 3, to provide them with work based skills and certification. In addition our staff are accredited to the CSCS / CCDO / CPCS card and Passport schemes of competence. All asbestos removal operatives receive annual training via an HSE approved asbestos training centre, certified by the National Demolition Training Group and CITB. Operatives also receive third party medical assessments and all have current face fit testing for their respiratory equipment.
Operations are managed at site level by highly-experienced and qualified Site Supervisors who oversee all operatives and operations on site. All Site Supervisors have undertaken the CITB Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme accreditation.
A nominated on-site Supervisor is allocated to oversee every project, supported by our Health and Safety, Environmental and Contracts Managers to ensure all site actions are carried out correctly, to the highest level of safety and to the lowest level of environmental impact. Executive Directors take a hands-on lead to support the Supervisors and Managers and ensure maintenance of our high standards through regular planned and, equally important, unplanned site visits.
Through careful planning, liaison with clients and their advisors, attention to health and safety considerations and specific site parameters, should some parts of a site need to remain operational for any reason, then we are able to operate in a live working environment, in difficult conditions so as to keep ongoing business operations running, whether out-of-hours, or within appropriate exclusion areas to carry out works whilst neighbouring operations continue.
To assist with feasibility studies, phasing or costing of any re-development plans, we are very happy to provide free budget quotes with indicative methodology and programming advice for your early assistance.
Ownership and management of a modern fleet of over 90 heavy goods vehicles, over 100 items of specialised heavy plant, and management of the extensive directly-employed workforce assures our competence and ability to control all logistics, plant and site operations, thus providing greater comfort and control to our clients.
The value of projects we undertake runs from tens of thousands to several million pounds.
