Earthworks

Whether dovetailing with a demolition package or a stand-alone contract, Thompsons of Prudhoe undertakes every aspect of earthworks, from initial site surveys, compliance with environmental legislation, right through to developing engineered building platforms and discharging required planning conditions. The company’s wealth of experience in major earthworks contracts enables us to offer alternative low cost solutions at tender and design stages, which enhance and add value to our customers’ demolition and construction projects. The team at Thompsons cover the whole spectrum of earthworks packages including bulk excavation, cut & fill, aggregate supply, muckaway and site preparation service, leaving any site ready and validated for the construction phase.

Earthworks has always been an integral and core service offering of the Thompsons of Prudhoe Group. It works across all Group disciplines such as the demolition and site reclamation divisions for brownfield redevelopment projects, with sister company W & M Thompson (Quarries) Ltd for its virgin aggregate supplies and utilising the North’s largest tipper fleet across all its projects, ensuring that many trucks are full on both inbound and outbound journeys to and from its sites. This significantly reduces our business’ carbon footprint, and the transport costs of most of our earthworks projects.

Whether requiring the development of a greenfield site, or a brownfield site – whether specifying virgin aggregate or recycled aggregate, clients have been coming to Thompsons’ earthworks team for the quality, versatility and value they bring as the most established premier earthworks contractor in the North East of England.

The Thompsons of Prudhoe Group deliver a “One Stop Shop” service for Brownfield developments. In essence, we take any site in any condition and:

  • Make it secure
  • Remove all asbestos and other hazardous waste
  • Demolish and clear
  • Remove slab
  • Remediate ground
  • Crush on site
  • Remove surplus
  • Supply any extra aggregate required: Primary, Secondary or Recycled
  • Provide any platform for construction
  • Hand over to Construction Contractor build-ready - without the need for any further sub-contractors.

With our extensive knowledge and practical experience of site waste management developed over 67 years, including obtaining Environment Agency Site Permits and utilizing industry approved end-of-waste protocols, we have a management solution to handle every waste stream which may be applicable to your project. We have particular expertise in our Earthworks business, working with our Site Reclamation teams, of handling all types of wastes, particularly inert and non-hazardous wastes, but also including liquid, heavy & bulky, hazardous material including asbestos, hazardous soils, industrial wastes and Japanese Knotweed.

We have an extensive modern fleet of plant & equipment of all sizes, including dozers, excavators, dump trucks, traxcavators, rollers, screens, dust suppression equipment, and when utilising the 90+ strong HGV tipper fleet makes us one of the most complete earthworks and site preparation teams in the country. Our GPS controlled dozers can work to computer models producing exact levels to fine tolerances.

In any year we will be handling around three quarters of a million cubic metres of material. We have access to a variety of restoration projects across the region, including projects within the Group, some requiring materials, others generating surplus. We can therefore satisfy any client that we can accommodate their earthmoving needs and can supply any tonnage or type of aggregate.

Thompsons of Prudhoe have undertaken all types and sizes of earthworks and enabling projects including the construction of new roads, bridges, railway lines, reservoirs, water treatment & sewerage facilities, industrial estates, warehouses & factories, housing developments, shopping centres, leisure centres, public amenity land, football pitches, golf courses, test tracks, office blocks, car parks – above and underground, and many others.

One of our most high-profile reclamation projects was the reclamation, preparation and surcharging the derelict land in Gateshead as part of the construction of the Metro Centre – Europe’s largest shopping centre in the mid 1980s. We are currently undertaking a 5 year reclamation project at a former waste water treatment facility generating half a million tonnes of quality recycled aggregate.

Our teams have extensive experience of working within close proximity to live services, equipment and transport links such as railway lines and motorways.

Delivery of our commitment to excellence in safety, environmental and technical performance is demonstrated by our awards, externally validated certifications, accreditations and our membership of the most appropriate trade associations for our business, ensuring we are always up to speed with best practice and current legislation.

It has long been the policy of Thompsons of Prudhoe Ltd to recycle as much of the material that arises from our operations as is reasonably possible. We have committed to reducing the level of waste being sent to landfill, and embedded this target into the company’s policies and procedures. This is not only cheaper, but also helps clients demonstrate and deliver a sustainable approach to their project delivery, reducing their overall environmental impact and carbon footprint. Our commitment to this is established through our ISO 14001 accreditation and our Company Policies.

There are two options for the recycling of excavated material – on site and off site. This will be determined by factors such as space available, client requirements, planning restrictions, environmental factors, programme and proximity to off-site facility.
Whether crushed and screened on site by our extensive plant fleet, or removed to an off-site recycling facility, all brick, concrete and mixed soils / brick / concrete material will be crushed, screened and processed into recycled materials meeting specification as required by a client, such as Type 1 sub-base or 6F2 which will be either reused on the project or on our other construction projects in the area.

The team at Thompsons are long standing members of the Environmental Services Association (ESA), the National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC), and the Asbestos Removal Contractors’ Association (ARCA). Individual staff members are members of the Institute of Demolition Engineers (IDE) and the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management (CIWM).

Through these organisations, we receive regular training on the latest industry developments to ensure that all our customers receive the highest possible levels of expertise on every aspect of their projects. Alongside this, Thompsons continually invest in the most up to date equipment to ensure that all our projects are delivered in a professional manner, on time and within budget, whilst also maintaining our excellent safety record. New machines are now supplied with GPS tracking and “intelligent control” technology to enhance operator skills to help complete projects with an even greater level of detail and in less time.

Over 85 site based operatives are currently employed directly by Thompsons. All plant and site operatives hold relevant CITB training, and competency cards for the areas in which they work. Operatives are trained through the National Demolition Training Group on all specialised equipment in use on our sites. Our operatives have also acquired vocational training at NVQ levels 2 and 3, to provide them with work based skills and certification. In addition our staff are accredited to the CSCS / CCDO / CPCS card and Passport schemes of competence. All asbestos removal operatives receive annual training via an HSE approved asbestos training centre, certified by the National Demolition Training Group and CITB. Operatives also receive third party medical assessments and all have current face fit testing for their respiratory equipment.

Operations are managed at site level by highly-experienced and qualified Site Supervisors who oversee all operatives and operations on site. All Site Supervisors have undertaken the CITB Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme accreditation.

A nominated on-site Supervisor is allocated to oversee every project, supported by our Health and Safety, Environmental and Contracts Managers to ensure all site actions are carried out correctly, to the highest level of safety and to the lowest level of environmental impact. Executive Directors take a hands-on lead to support the Supervisors and Managers and ensure maintenance of our high standards through regular planned and, equally important, unplanned site visits.

To assist with feasibility studies, phasing or costing of any re-development plans, we are very happy to provide free budget quotes with indicative methodology and programming advice for your early assistance.

Ownership and management of a fleet of over 90 heavy goods vehicles, over 100 items of specialised heavy plant, and management of the extensive directly-employed workforce assures our competence and ability to control all logistics, plant and site operations, thus providing greater comfort and control to our clients.

The value of projects we undertake runs from tens of thousands to several million pounds.
